This main Orthhodox cathedral of the country is the second largest cathedral in the world; it has had a chequered history. Originally it was to be built somewhere else- on Sparrow Hills. But this project  failed. The cathedral was subsequently built in its  present location. The construction lasted more than 40 years. It was consecrated in 1883. But in 1931 it was razed to the ground in just 45 minutes on the orders of Stalin. The present cathedral is a replica of the original one. It took only 5 years to build and  was consecrated in the year of 2000.

You can visit it daily but please remember that there is a  dress code for Orthodox cathedrals and churches: women must cover their heads; men must remove their hats; shorts and t-shirts revealing bare shoulders are not allowed.
